Memphis brings aboard center back Tulu

Togolese defender has previously played for San Antonio FC, Hartford Athletic in Championship

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis 901 FC announced on Tuesday the club has signed Walid “Tulu” Yacoubou to a multi-year contract ahead of the 2024 USL Championship season. The transaction is pending league and federation approval.

Tulu joins Memphis having most recently competed in the Championship for San Antonio FC, where he made six appearances and logged 250 minutes after a mid-season transfer from Hartford Athletic. The Togolese center back had previously spent two-and-a-half seasons with Hartford, where he made 52 appearances.

“We are delighted to welcome Tulu to Memphis,” Assistant Sporting Director Caleb Patterson-Sewell said. “He is very experienced in the Championship and brings good athleticism to our defensive group, he is strong 1v1 and has very good character. Our fans will love his style of play and we look forward to Tulu helping us achieve success in 2024.”

Tulu has made 62 appearances in the Championship during his career overall, having competed for FC Tulsa in the 2019 season. He has recorded 4,443 minutes of action while recording 242 clearances and 48 interceptions while posting a tackle success rate of 66 percent and a duel success rate of 50.2 percent.
