DETROIT – Detroit City FC announced on Monday it had signed longtime goalkeeper Nate Steinwascher to a new, two-year guaranteed contract that will run through the 2025 Championship season.

Steinwascher debuted for Detroit City FC in 2016 against Louisville City FC in the U.S. Open Cup and has appeared for Le Rouge in every season since as the club rose up the ranks and into the USL Championship for the 2022 season. The local standout has quickly become one of the top goalkeepers in the league, and this past season was nominated for the Championship’s Goalkeeper of the Year award after recording 93 saves – good for fourth in the league - and a save percentage of 73.8 percent in the regular season.

The 30-year-old is one of four players to have made 100 professional appearances for Detroit City alongside teammates Connor Rutz, Stephen Carroll, and Maxi Rodriguez. Steinwascher currently sits at 105 professional appearances for Detroit City FC, with 45 shutouts since the start of the 2020 season.

Analysis

It seemed inconceivable that Nate Steinwascher wouldn’t be between the sticks for Detroit City FC as it kicked off its third campaign in the USL Championship in 2024, and the new two-year deal with Le Rouge will keep one of the league’s most impressive goalkeepers in their ranks. Over the past two seasons, Steinwascher has put up eye-popping numbers and his consistency has been key to DCFC’s consecutive postseason berths while earning deserved plaudits around the league.

The 30-year-old leads the Championship with 186 saves across the regular season and playoffs over the past two seasons, while also ranking second among goalkeepers with 68 appearances and 24 shutouts in that span. Steinwascher has also posted a 72.8 percent save percentage since joining the league, but the most important number he has delivered is a -9.09 Goals Prevented mark which is rivaled by only Oakland Roots SC’s Paul Blanchette over the same time-span. New Le Rouge Head Coach Danny Dichio – and everyone else at Keyworth Stadium – will be happy to have Steinwascher back in the fold once again.
