EDINBURG, Texas – Rio Grande Valley FC announced on Tuesday the departure of Sporting Director and Head Coach Wilmer Cabrera after three seasons at the club. Cabrera was in his second stint as the Toros’ sideline leader having previously led the side to the USL Championship Playoffs in its inaugural season in 2016.

The former United States international returned to the Toros at the start of the 2021 USL Championship season as the club assumed independence from its prior partnership with Houston Dynamo FC, and helped the side become a playoff contender over the past three seasons. In 2021, the Toros advance to the postseason as the No. 4 seed in the Mountain Division and produced one of the biggest upsets in the Championship Playoffs history, defeating No. 1 seed Phoenix Rising FC in a penalty shootout after the sides had played to a 3-3 draw through regulation and extra time.

The Toros returned to the postseason in 2022 as the No. 6 seed in the Western Conference before falling in the Western Conference Quarterfinals, but this year missed out on a third consecutive trip to the playoffs despite a standout season from midfielder leader Taylor Davila, who earned 2023 All-League Second Team honors.

Cabrera was 37-37-29 as the Toros Head Coach over the past three regular seasons. In a social media post, he announced he would be moving on to a new opportunity.
