Former Violette Athletic Club star set to join club for 2024 Championship season

Oakland Roots SC has added Haitian forward Miche-Naider Chéry, who featured for Violette AC in its upset of Austin FC in the 2023 Concacaf Champions League.

OAKLAND, Calif. – Oakland Roots SC announced on Friday the club had signed forward Miche-Naider Chéry ahead of the 2024 USL Championship season. The transaction is pending league and federation approval.

The Haiti native joins the side from Violette Athletic Club, with which he won the 2022 Caribbean Club Championship before starring in the side’s upset of Austin FC of Major League Soccer in the 2023 Concacaf Champions League.

“We have watched Miche in training now and know the impact he can have for us in 2024,” said Roots Head Coach Noah Delgado. “We believe he will be a great fit to our style of play and team culture.”

The 25-year-old went on to score twice in the Quarterfinals of the 2023 Concacaf Champions League against León of Liga MX, giving him four goals in four games during the tournament before Violette was eliminated.

Analysis

If you followed the 2023 Concacaf Champions League, you’ll have seen Miche-Naider Chéry in action in one of the most remarkable upsets in the tournament’s history. Bagging a pair of goals in Violette’s 3-0 victory against Austin FC during its “home” leg – played in the Dominican Republic due to the crisis in Haiti – Chéry became an overnight sensation.

Now he’ll look to bring that goalscoring prowess to a forward line in Oakland that returns 2023 leading scorer Johnny Rodriguez with the aim of providing a consistent second scoring threat in his first season in the USL Championship.
