LEESBURG, Va. - Loudoun United FC announced on Thursday the club had signed midfielder Drew Skundrich to a two-year contract ahead of the 2024 USL Championship season. The transaction is pending league and federation approval.

Skundrich joins the Red-and-White having most recently competed for Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC in the USL Championship. The 28-year-old has competed in four seasons in the league overall, including a prior stop at Sacramento Republic FC. Skundrich also played two seasons with D.C. United in Major League Soccer where he notched more than 2,000 minutes of action in 39 appearances.

“Drew [Skundrich] is one of the top midfielders in the USL Championship and will add a lot of quality and experience to our team,” said Loudoun United FC Head Coach Ryan Martin. “He covers a lot of ground and is a proven winner. We look forward to adding him to our 2024 team and will be a key midfielder to build our foundation around.”

ANALYSIS

Drew Skundrich’s arrival at Loudoun United FC is the next line of demarcation for a club now aiming to create its own identity in Attain Sports’ first full offseason in the free agent market. Skundrich’s arrival is aided by his off-field life – he’s the husband of United States Women’s National Team and Washington Spirit star Andi Sullivan – but his qualities will provide a major boost to the center of the park for Loudoun.

Skundrich was supposed to suit up for Loudoun before – in 2021 he signed for the club but did such an impressive job in preseason with D.C. United that he signed an MLS deal before making an appearance in Loudoun’s colors. This past season, he was an important piece in the Switchbacks’ success this past campaign, making 32 appearances across the regular season and playoffs. He completed more than 1,000 passes at an accuracy rate of 80.3 percent and is a strong ball-winning presence as well with 36 tackles won and 120 duels won in the 2023 campaign. His experience will also be a valuable addition to Loudoun’s locker room as it takes aim at first trip to the postseason.
