LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Louisville City FC will try to extend a remarkable postseason streak, while Detroit City FC will look for a second consecutive road upset as the sides square off on Saturday night in the Eastern Conference Semifinals of the 2023 USL Championship Playoffs. Kickoff at Lynn Family Stadium is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET Here’s what you need to know.

How They Got Here

Louisville City FC (14-12-8, 50pts) – Playing its first road game to open a postseason in club history, LouCity advanced in a penalty shootout against Memphis 901 FC last Saturday night as Oscar Jimenez scored the decisive goal to open the fifth round from the spot before a 901 FC miss sealed the win. The sides played to a 1-1 draw through regulation and extra time, with Cameron Lancaster scoring his seventh postseason goal to level the game in the 18th minute after Louisville had gone behind after just 32 seconds at AutoZone Park. With a win against Detroit, LouCity would reach the Eastern Conference Final of the Championship Playoffs for a ninth consecutive season and keep its bid to become the first three-time title winner in league history alive.

Detroit City FC (11-15-8, 41pts) – Detroit City recorded one of the biggest upsets in the Championship Playoffs’ history with a 1-0 win against Players’ Shield winner Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC at Highmark Stadium last Saturday, with the point-differential of 26 points the largest of any upset of a No. 1 seed in the league’s postseason history. DCFC Academy product Dominic Gasso scored the only goal with 12 minutes to go as Le Rouge earned its first postseason win since joining the USL Championship for the 2022 season. The victory was earned despite Detroit recording only four total shots, the fewest in a postseason win in league history.

All-Time Series

Louisville City FC has taken three out of four league meetings between the sides, and took victory when the teams met most recently in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, advancing in a penalty shootout in the Fourth Round in 2022. Le Rouge won 2-0  in their most recent meeting on July 19 at Keyworth Stadium.

Opta Says

11 – Cameron Lancaster’s equalizer against Memphis 901 FC was the 11th goal Louisville City FC has scored off a corner kick this season, the most in the league.

7 – Detroit City FC has scored seven goals from free kicks so far this campaign, the most in the league, accounting for 23 percent of the club’s goals this season.

Players to Watch

Louisville City FC – Cameron Lancaster: LouCity’s all-time leading goalscorer recorded his seventh postseason goal against Memphis, and is now one shy of equaling Brian Ownby’s eight playoff goals in the Championship.

Detroit City FC – Maxi Rodriguez: The DCFC veteran had a key role in his side’s first win against LouCity this season, notching one assist, and will be looked to for a positive performance against a versatile Louisville midfield.
