Ahead of the 2023 USL Championship Playoffs, the two managers discuss their pathways, and the key elements in creating a strong club culture

In this season’s final edition of The Craft presented by Tequila Corralejo, we brought together San Antonio FC Head Coach Alen Marcina and Orange County SC Head Coach Morten Karlsen, both of whom are set to lead their clubs into the 2023 USL Championship Playoffs this month.

Since becoming the Head Coach of San Antonio FC in 2020, Marcina implemented a new philosophy that saw the side claim the 2022 USL Championship Players’ Shield and Championship Final, becoming only the fourth team to win both titles in the same season in league history.

Karlsen, meanwhile, has guided 2021 Championship title winner back to prominence this season, becoming the first coach in league history to earn the Championship Coach of the Month award in consecutive months this July and August.

In The Craft, they discuss their pathway into the coaching ranks from their playing career, the things they’ve learned as assistants and the advice they would give aspiring coaches looking to make their way in the game.
