The Lowdown: Birmingham Legion FC will look for a second consecutive victory as it visits Rio Grande Valley FC with the hosts in need of a victory to keep their slim playoff hopes alive with six games to go in the season. The Toros (7-10-11, 32pts) remain on a three-game winless streak after their most recent outing last Saturday against Hartford Athletic was postponed due to lightning and heavy rain at Trinity Health Stadium. With RGV FC idle, the gap to the playoff places has grown to seven points after Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC’s victory against Orange County SC on Friday night, putting the Toros under pressure to cut into that deficit back on home turf. Legion FC (12-13-3, 39pts) steadied its bid to earn a fifth consecutive playoff berth last Sunday, meanwhile, as Neco Brett’s 11th goal of the season lifted the side to a 1-0 win against New Mexico United. The Jamaican’s goal was his 80th in the USL Championship’s regular season, moving him into sole possession of second place in league history. With Indy Eleven’s defeat in New Mexico on Friday night, Birmingham would move up a spot in the standings with all three points, but the side has only won one of its last four away outings dating back to August 4.
