EDINBURG, Texas – Rio Grande Valley FC announced on Friday the recall of forward Wilmer Cabrera Jr. from his loan by Colombian club Real Cartagena. In a secondary transaction, Cabrera will join German club, Greifswalder FC via transfer to begin the next stage of his professional career.

Cabrera was originally loaned to Rio Grande Valley FC on March 3, 2023, marking his return to the USL Championship after a successful four-year collegiate career at Butler University.

Prior to entering the collegiate ranks, Cabrera made 30 appearances and scored four goals for the Toros as a USL Academy signing in 2018 and 2019 under the direction of Gerson Echeverry. He made his return to Rio Grande Valley FC, now under the direction of both, current Toros Director of Scouting and Assistant Coach Echeverry and Sporting Director and Head Coach Wilmer Cabrera Sr.

The Colombian striker departs the Toros as the club’s leading scorer this season with seven goals to go with three assists in 25 appearances, in which he logged 1,830 minutes.

“My time at RGV FC is one I will cherish forever, being able to go back to play with the club for a second time was amazing,” said Cabrera. “Playing for my father was a dream I have always had, and I am thankful I was able to achieve it these past couple of months.

“I wouldn’t have grown into the player that I am now if it wasn’t for the coaching staff and my teammates. To the club, I wish you the best the rest of the way and am eternally grateful to the fans who proudly shared the joy of being a Toro with me.”
