SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio FC announced on Monday it will host C.D. Tapatío of the Liga de Expansión MX at Toyota Field on September 12 in a Duelo de Campeones. The matchup will feature the reigning USL Championship Title Winners in SAFC, and the Campeón de Campeones Final Winners in Tapatío from Liga de Expansion MX, the second tier in Mexico.
“We are thrilled to be able to welcome another title-winning side to Toyota Field,” said Toyota Field Director Jose Lizardo. “It presents a great opportunity for fans to see the best of the USL Championship, and the best of the Liga de Expansión MX in a head-to-head Duelo de Campeones.”
Tapatío is the official reserve team of C.D. Guadalajara. Tapatío won the Campeón de Campeones Final on June 3, winning 3-2 against Atlante on aggregate after the final’s two legs. Tapatío had previously won the Clausura in the 2022-23 Liga de Expansion MX season in May, defeating Atletico Morelia 4-2 on aggregate in the final to advance to the Campeón de Campeones.
San Antonio claimed its first USL Championship title last November with a 3-1 victory against Louisville City FC at Toyota Field in the 2022 USL Championship Final. The side currently sits in second place in the Championship’s Western Conference while leading the league with 47 goals this season.
