BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Birmingham Legion FC announced on Saturday the club had acquired midfielder Tyler Freeman on loan from Major League Soccer club Nashville SC for the remainder of the 2023 USL Championship season. Freeman will be available for selection in Legion FC’s contest on Saturday against the Charleston Battery at Protective Stadium.

The 20-year-old has made 59 career appearances in the USL Championship, including 24 appearances a season ago for Loudoun United FC in which he recorded eight goals. Freeman signed with Nashville SC on January 3, and has since played for MLS NEXT Pro team, Huntsville City FC.

Freeman is a product of the Sporting Kansas City Academy, which he joined when he was 11 years old. He excelled within the Sporting Kansas City system, becoming the second youngest player in Sporting Kansas City history to sign an MLS contract at the age of 15 in 2018. While part of SKC’s organization, Freeman recorded 35 USL Championship appearances and contributed six goals and one assist on loan with Sporting Kansas City II.

“We are excited to have Tyler in Birmingham,” said Jay Heaps, Legion FC President and General Manager. “He is an attacking player that will bring versatility to our group.”

Sporting Kansas City loaned Freeman to Karlsruher SC, in August of 2021, for the 2021-2022 Germany 2. Bundesliga season where he made four appearances.

Internationally, Freeman has represented the United States with the U-14, U-16, and U-17 national teams. He played a part in helping the U.S. to a second-place finish in the 2019 Concacaf U-17 Championship.

“I’m looking forward to playing with this team,” said Freeman. “Hopefully I can help the team to succeed and win the league this season and bring a trophy to Birmingham.”
