Hounds continue to roll in club’s longest undefeated streak of Championship era

In the past week with wins against Louisville City FC and Detroit City FC, Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC extended its undefeated streak to 13 games.

It’s the longest such streak the club has achieved in the USL Championship era, surpassing the 11-game run the club made four years ago in its most successful regular season of the past decade.

There’s still one more mark out there for the Hounds to achieve, however. How far back do you have to go to find a longer undefeated streak in Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC history?

Try 19 years.

In 2004, in the simply named USL Pro Soccer League – sitting at the Division III level – the side went 15 games without defeat and finished on top of the Atlantic Division of the 12-team league. The playoffs – as they have so often – didn’t quite work out as the gloriously named Utah Blitzz ended the Hounds’ run in the semifinals before claiming the title that season.

This is a different era, though, and one in which the Hounds are following the same formula as they always have under Head Coach Bob Lilley. Be solid defensively – they’re now tied for fewest goals conceded in the league and have four consecutive shutouts – and difficult to beat – two losses in 20 games, check – and find enough goalscoring to make a difference.

Albert Dikwa’s return to the lineup is a major boost in that regard, with his 10th goal of the season against LouCity putting Cameroonian tied for the league lead. Edward Kizza banged in his first goal since May against DCFC on Saturday, meanwhile, staking the side to an early lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

“Against Louisville, we didn’t start off good,” said Kizza. “It took us at least 20 minutes to get into the game. So today, putting pressure on and getting a goal after eight minutes against a very physical team gave us a great boost.”

There are going to be major challenges ahead, and the Hounds will have to hope their postseason luck changes, but there’s no question of the potential this side has to deliver silverware this season.

Here’s how the rest of this week’s rankings look.

Summary

1 Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC
(10-2-8)
Week 20: @ CHS
1
Last Week:
2
Two wins, two shutouts, a 13-game undefeated streak and the Hounds are sitting in first place in the Players’ Shield standings. Oh, and Jahmali Waite’s back from international duty.
2 San Antonio FC
(9-3-7)
Week 20: v. MIA
2
Last Week:
4
You want a stat? Last Wednesday’s victory at El Paso Locomotive FC was the first time San Antonio had won on the road after trailing at halftime since August, 2018. Shout-out to PC for the stunner against Sunderland, too
3 Sacramento Republic FC
(9-2-8)
Week 20: @ NM

Last Week:
3
Republic FC is still banged up personnel-wise, but they got just enough to earn a point against Memphis on Saturday night to keep their noses ahead of San Antonio in the standings.
4 Tampa Bay Rowdies
(10-5-4)
Week 20: @ IND
3
Last Week:
1
Well, that was a bit of a letdown. Credit to Birmingham for not giving the Rowdies much to work with in the final third, but the next couple of weeks are going to be important ahead of their trip to Pittsburgh.
5 El Paso Locomotive FC
(9-5-5)
Week 20: v. OAK

Last Week:
5
Almost a disaster week for Locomotive FC, which was this close to losing to both of its Copa Tejas rivals. The pack’s starting to close in after this winless run.
6 Charleston Battery
(9-5-6)
Week 20: v. PIT

Last Week:
6
Coming back to earn draws on the road against desperate opposition was a good enough week for the Battery, who’ll get their shot to close the gap on the Hounds this Saturday in a must-see game.
7 Rio Grande Valley FC
(5-5-9)
Week 20: @ TUL
2
Last Week:
9
The Toros couldn’t quite hold on in El Paso, but that’s seven games without defeat and the longest such streak since the club’s inaugural season in 2016.
8 San Diego Loyal SC
(8-5-6)
Week 20: --
7
Last Week:
15
If winning at Hartford was solid, winning on the road in Colorado Springs – and scoring five goals to boot – was spectacular. With a break before five consecutive home games, SD Loyal is poised to make a run.
9 Orange County SC
(7-9-4)
Week 20: @ MEM
2
Last Week:
11
Getting a first goal under his belt will be big for Marc McNulty, and it helped OCSC get right back on the horse and into playoff contention.
10 Birmingham Legion FC
(8-8-2)
Week 20: @ LOU
3
Last Week:
13
It wasn’t spectacular, but a solid win at home with a stellar defensive display was kind of what Legion FC needed at this point. The side can pull level on points with Louisville with a win this Saturday.
11 Phoenix Rising FC
(6-5-7)
Week 20: v. COS
3
Last Week:
8
The next few weeks are going to tell us a lot about what Phoenix might be capable of, starting with Saturday night’s home game against a Switchbacks side that is going to be smarting.
12 Louisville City FC
(8-5-5)
Week 20: @ DET, v. BHM
5
Last Week:
7
LouCity has a couple of games in hand, but that nine-point gap to the top of the standings is looking wide. Hosting Birmingham this weekend isn’t going to be easy, either.
13 New Mexico United
(7-7-4)
Week 20: v. SAC
1
Last Week:
12
United slipped below the playoff line while it was off while having games in hand, but this Saturday’s game against Sacramento Republic FC is a chance to show how far it has grown under Eric Quill.
14 FC Tulsa
(6-7-7)
Week 20: v. RGV
3
Last Week:
17
They might as well start planning the statue for Phillip Goodrum now. Six goals in nine games and coming through in key moments has Tulsa on a four-game winning streak and looking solid for a playoff berth.
15 Memphis 901 FC
(8-4-6)
Week 20: v. OC
1
Last Week:
14
Much better by Memphis this week, but they couldn’t find a way to a victory. This week’s return home is going to be important to get back in the win column.
16 Oakland Roots SC
(7-6-6)
Week 20: @ ELP
2
Last Week:
18
Jeciel Cedeno looks to be fitting in just fine with his new club. Impact player in a four-point week that was much-needed for Roots SC’s confidence.
17 Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC
(9-10-1)
Week 20: @ PHX
7
Last Week:
10
If anything could go wrong for the Switchbacks on Friday night, it did. Certainly not one for Christian Herrera to add to his highlight reel.
18 Monterey Bay F.C.
(7-7-6)
Week 20: @ DET
2
Last Week:
16
Four games without a win for MBFC after falling to Oakland on Saturday night, and with two teams poised with games in hand right below them the pressure is going to be on in the next few weeks.
19 Indy Eleven
(5-7-6)
Week 20: v. TBR

Last Week:
19
Indy is still above the playoff line, but it keeps finding ways to avoid taking wins. Horrible miscommunication on the Battery’s equalizer last Wednesday night.
20 Miami FC
(3-9-8)
Week 20: @ SA

Last Week:
20
Once again, Miami just couldn’t quite hold onto a lead in a game it probably should have won. That’s 13 points dropped from winning positions this season, only Hartford has more.
21 Las Vegas Lights FC
(1-9-8)
Week 20: v. HFD

Last Week:
21
Las Vegas is going to be a favorite at home to Hartford Athletic this weekend. Let’s see if it results in a second win of the season.
22 Loudoun United FC
(6-14-2)
Week 20: --

Last Week:
22
Having played four games fewer than Indy Eleven, it’s not wrong to say Loudoun’s home game with Miami FC is a must win. Time is starting to run short.
23 Detroit City FC
(4-11-5)
Week 20: v. LOU, v. MB

Last Week:
23
Hats off, Dario Suarez. If only Detroit’s attack could find the net more consistently from slightly closer to the net.
24 Hartford Athletic
(2-13-4)
Week 20: @ LV

Last Week:
24
So near, and yet so far for Hartford. This is starting to get reminiscent of the start of the Athletic’s inaugural season.
