PITTSBURGH – Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC added to its attacking options with the signing of forward Juan Carlos Obregón Jr. to a deal for the rest of the 2023 season. The transaction is pending league and federation approval.

Obregón is a New York native who has represented Honduras at the U-23 level and was part of the side that competed at the 2020 Olympics in Japan. He has previously played four seasons in the USL Championship, suiting up for Rio Grande Valley FC in 2019-20 and with Hartford Athletic in 2021-22.

“JC is a busy forward with good ideas and movement in attacking areas,” said Hounds Head Coach Bob Lilley. “His technical quality will also be a valuable addition to our team, and we are excited to have him here in Pittsburgh chasing individual as well as team goals.”

In 70 regular-season appearances in his four USL Championship seasons, Obregón has scored 19 goals, including one in both 2021 and 2022 at Highmark Stadium against the Hounds. After finishing 2022 with Hartford, he joined FC Motagua in Honduras’ Liga Nacional for the recent Clausura season.

Before turning pro, Obregón played college soccer for two years at Siena before joining the Under-20 team of storied Mexican club Necaxa in 2017.

Some of Obregón’s biggest achievements came during Honduras’ 2020 Olympic campaign (played in 2021 due to the pandemic). He scored the opening goal of Honduras’ 2-1 win over the United States that clinched an Olympic berth at the expense of the U.S., and at the Olympic tournament in Japan, he scored again to propel Honduras to a 3-2 win over New Zealand in group play.

Obregón began training with the Hounds this week and is expected to be eligible for selection this Saturday when the Hounds host Sacramento Republic FC at 7 p.m. ET at Highmark Stadium.
