Charleston Battery star Fidel Barajas received his latest call-up to the Mexico U-17 Men’s National Team on Friday with El Tri set to face Brazil in a pair of contests in the upcoming week as it begins its preparations for the FIFA Men’s U-17 World Cup in November.

Mexico will play Brazil next Tuesday, June 27 in Toluca before a second game on Friday, June 30 at the High-Performance Center of the Mexican Football Federation outside Mexico City.

One of the current young standouts in the USL Championship, Barajas was a key player as Mexico claimed the Concacaf U-17 Championship in February as he recorded three goals and five assists in the tournament. The 17-year-old started all seven games of the tournament, including a 3-1 win against the United States in the final.

Barajas has continued his creative form into the 2023 USL Championship season and currently sits tied for the league-lead with five assists while also having notched his first league goal early in the season. He also leads the Battery with 19 chances created and is one of the leading contenders for the Championship’s Young Player of the Year award as the midway point of the season nears.

Mexico’s success in February saw the side qualify for the 2023 FIFA Men’s U-17 World Cup, which was announced on Friday to be held in Indonesia this November.
