OAKLAND, Calif. – Oakland Roots SC announced on Thursday the club had acquired midfielder Jeciel Cedeño via transfer from fellow USL Championship club Hartford Athletic. In a corresponding transaction, Oakland also announced the transfer to Hartford of defender Edgardo Rito for an undisclosed fee.

Cedeño joins Oakland having spent the past two-plus seasons with Hartford, where he signed prior to the 2021 USL Championship season. A product of the New York Red Bulls Academy, where he made two appearances for the New York Red Bulls II as a USL Academy signing in 2019, the 23-year-old has already set a new career-high in minutes this season for the Athletic while recording his first two goals in the professional ranks.

“We are excited to add Cedeño to our mix,” said Roots Technical Director Jordan Ferrell. “While we thank Rito for his time with our club, this transfer was a great fit for all parties.”

A native of Ecuador, Cedeño has logged 1,254 minutes across 38 appearances in the USL Championship during his career overall.
