Championship Player of the Month Nominees – May

A busy month of action saw five players pile on goals and assist, who gets your vote?

TAMPA, Fla. – The USL Championship announced on Thursday the five nominees for the USL Championship Player of the Month award Presented by Konami eFootball for May, honoring five of the top performers throughout the third month of the 2023 season as they take their place on the ballot.

Voting in the Championship Player of the Month Award will be conducted by the following three voting bodies:

  • A fan vote on USLChampionship.com will comprise 51 percent of the poll. The fan vote will run through Monday, June 5 at 12 p.m. ET.

  • The USL Technical Committee’s ballots comprise 25 percent of the poll.

  • The USL National Media Panel’s ballots comprise 24 percent of the poll.

The award winner and complete voting results will be announced on Thursday, June 8.

Please note: The USL Championship Player of the Month selection process in no way is tied directly to the voting and selection process of End of the Year awards such as USL Championship Most Valuable Player or position players of the year.

USL Championship Player of the Month – May 2023

Tani Oluwaseyi, San Antonio FC – Oluwaseyi recorded four goals and two assists in four appearances after his arrival on loan from Minnesota United FC, as he sat tied for the league-lead in goal contributions for the month and posted a league-high +2.17 Goals Added mark via American Soccer Analysis with a strike rate of a goal every 72.5 minutes.

JJ Williams, Tampa Bay Rowdies – Williams recorded five goals and one assist in four appearances, including his first hat trick in the league, to sit tied for the league-lead with six goal contributions in the month while ranking second in the league with a +2.12 Goals Added mark via American Soccer Analysis and a strike rate of a goal every 66.6 minutes.

Russell Cicerone, Sacramento Republic FC – Cicerone recorded five goals in four appearances to move into a tie for the league-lead in the Golden Boot race and reach 50 regular season goals in his career. Cicerone’s strike rate sat at a goal every 68 minutes as he helped the league’s highest-scoring attack continue to thrive.

Albert Dikwa, Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC – Dikwa continued his stellar season with four goals in three appearances at a strike rate of a goal every 60.5 minutes as the Hounds went undefeated during the month and ranked third in the league with a +1.61 Goals Added mark via American Soccer Analysis.

Ryan Spaulding, Tampa Bay Rowdies – Spaulding recorded an assist in every game of the month for the Rowdies, moving into a tie for the league lead with four, and had 10 chances created while sitting fourth in the league with a +1.57 Goals Added mark via American Soccer Analysis.
