CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Charleston Battery announced on Friday the club had acquired forward Roberto “Beto” Avila on loan from Houston Dynamo FC of Major League Soccer for the remainder of the 2023 season.

Avila will be available for selection when the Battery visit Rio Grande Valley FC on Saturday night, with the 22-year-old bringing attacking versatility to the Battery as the club approaches the heart of the 2023 USL Championship season.

“I’m really grateful for this opportunity and to show everyone what I’m made of in Charleston,” said Avila. “It’s been good getting to know my new teammates. I’m looking forward to contributing to the club’s success and fighting for a trophy with the team. Also, I’m excited to meet and celebrate with all of the Battery fans soon.”

Avila ascended through Houston’s system before making his MLS debut in 2022, initially joining their academy early in his career and later signing with Dynamo 2 of MLS NEXT Pro. He was the first player signed to the Dynamo from Dynamo 2 and was also the first player to sign an MLS contract after competing in MLS NEXT Pro.

The forward has made 11 appearances for the Dynamo across all competitions since 2022, registering one assist. With Dynamo 2, Avila scored eight goals and added eight assists in 20 matches since 2022.

“Beto is a fierce competitor and a proven attacker in MLS and the USL Championship,” said Battery Head Coach Ben Pirmann. “He will make an immediate impact in our attacking corps as he can play centrally or in wide areas. Beto’s ability to create and score chances, as well as link-up play with his teammates, will provide us with a new look to the squad.

“Not only is Beto an aggressive and efficient player, but he is a hard worker and a good teammate that will fit in well with our selfless group.”

While only 22 years old, Avila has amassed extensive experience at the professional level. Avila made his professional debut in the USL Championship in 2019 with Austin Bold FC, where he made 32 appearances across three seasons, tallying four goals and two assists. He also spent a brief loan spell with Canadian Premier League side FC Edmonton in 2021.

Avila rejoins former Austin teammate Emilio Ycaza with the Battery. The two played together in the Texas capital in 2021.
