SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio FC announced on Wednesday the club had acquired defender Walid “Tulu” Yacoubou via transfer from fellow USL Championship club Hartford Athletic. The transaction is pending league and federation approval, and per team policy, terms of the transfer were not disclosed.

“We are delighted to welcome Tulu to the team,” said San Antonio Head Coach Alen Marcina. “He is a USL Championship experienced center back that will add to our defensive core. He is a physical presence, with very good recovery speed, and is dominant in 1vs1 defensive situations. Tulu is a great professional who we feel will be a team culture fit.”

Tulu joins SAFC after appearing in 54 matches over three seasons with Hartford, recording 3,994 minutes for the club. Last season, the Togolese defender appeared in 23 matches and made 18 starts as he ranked second on the team in blocked shots (27) and third in clearances (88). The 26-year-old also recorded a pair of goals for the side, and while at Hartford recorded a duel success rate of 50.6 percent and aerial duel success rate of 54.7 percent.

Prior to joining Hartford in 2021, Tulu spent time in Portugal with Sporting club Ideal, Swedish third division side IFK Holmsund and USL Championship side FC Tulsa, where he made four appearances during the 2019 season.
