Detroit City FC’s Nathan Steinwascher claims Player of the Week after shutout, assist in Le Rouge’s win vs. San Antonio FC

TAMPA, Fla. – The USL Championship announced the Team of the Week for Week 11 of the 2023 regular season on Tuesday, with Detroit City FC’s Nathan Steinwascher voted the Championship Player of the Week presented by Konami eFootball after recording a three-save shutout and posting the first assist of his career – and the second by a goalkeeper in the USL Championship this season – in Le Rouge’s 1-0 victory against San Antonio FC at Keyworth Stadium on Saturday night.

The local standout provided an early contribution to his side’s victory as Steinwascher’s long pass upfield bounded through to teammate Skage Simonsen, who produced a spectacular finish in the fifth minute to put the hosts ahead. Steinwascher joined El Paso Locomotive FC goalkeeper Benny Diaz in recording an assist this season and became the 11th goalkeeper on record in the Championship’s regular season to record an assist and a shutout in the same game. From there, Steinwascher made the lead stand up with three saves, including a crucial late denial of SAFC’s Tani Oluwaseyi, while also claiming four crosses as the hosts held firm to a first home win of the league campaign.

Steinwascher earned 40 percent of the ballot to claim the award. Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC’s Edward Kizza finished second on 27 percent after recording the first two goals in the Hounds’ 4-1 victory against Las Vegas Lights FC on Saturday night at Highmark Stadium.
