First-half goals by Redes, Urutti send hosts to 2-0 win at Q2 Stadium against United

AUSTIN, Texas – New Mexico United’s hopes of another deep run in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup ended in the Round of 32 on Wednesday night as first-half goals by Rodney Redes and Maxi Urutti send Austin FC of Major League Soccer through with a 2-0 victory at Q2 Stadium.

New Mexico opened the game brightly and had the first good looks on goal, including a volleyed effort by Santi Moar in the 12th minute that flashed just over the crossbar after a good cross from the right by Sergio Rivas. The hosts began to take more control after that early spell, however, and in the 24th minute Austin took the lead as a near-post corner from the left by Emi Rigoni found Redes for a beautiful looping header that picked out the far corner of the net.

Austin struck again eight minutes before halftime when Adam Lundkvist broke forward on the left flank and delivered a fine cross that was met first-time by Urutti at the top of the six-yard area to give the hosts a two-goal lead.

United tried to find a way back into the game, and received a boost of energy off the bench as Amando Moreno and Alex Waggoner both made a positive impact. New Mexico goalkeeper Alex Tambakis also helped keep the hosts at bay in the second half, ending the night with six saves overall, while Waggoner almost delivered his first senior goal in second-half stoppage time after a good run into the penalty area was picked out by Moreno, only for the 18-year-old’s shot to go wide of the left post.

Austin had already done enough to claim its first victory in the Open Cup in club history, however, as it advanced into the Round of 16.
