The Southern Harm rivalry is coming to the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

USL Championship rivals Birmingham Legion FC and Memphis 901 FC were drawn to square off on Thursday afternoon as the league’s eight remaining clubs in this year’s competition learned their next opponents, bringing one of the Championship’s top rivalries to the historic tournament.

Loudoun United FC, Monterey Bay F.C. and Sacramento Republic FC also received home draws and will welcome opposition from Major League Soccer on May 9 or 10 when the next round kicks off.

Birmingham Legion FC and Memphis 901 FC entered the USL Championship alongside one another, continuing a soccer rivalry that had previously developed between the two cities in the amateur division. This year marks the deepest run for both clubs in the Open Cup in their respective histories, with one now set to reach the Round of 16 for the first time.

2022 Open Cup finalists Republic FC will play host to the Colorado Rapids at Heart Health Park as it takes aim at emulating its remarkable run of a season ago. Sacramento has won 15 consecutive Open Cup contests at its home venue, including victories against the San Jose Earthquakes and Sporting Kansas City a season ago, as it prepares to face the Rapids.

Monterey Bay will play host to reigning MLS Cup title holder Los Angeles FC at Cardinale Stadium with the second-year club coming off its first victory against a top-flight squad on Tuesday night in this year’s Third Round. Christian Volesky’s goals sent MBFC past the San Jose Earthquakes, and now Head Coach Frank Yallop’s side will try to spring one of the upsets of the tournament.

Loudoun United FC will face MLS opposition for the first time in its history as it plays host to Columbus Crew SC at Segra Field after cruising into the Round of 32 with a 5-0 victory against Flower City Union on Wednesday night. The Crew advanced 1-0 past Indy Eleven in the prior round, and now will visit a Loudoun side that will be looking to deliver a memorable night in its history in the first year of its new era under the ownership of Attain Sports and Entertainment.

Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC, New Mexico United and the Charleston Battery will all head on the road, with the Battery drawn to face Major League Soccer’s Inter Miami CFC in South Florida after Inter just advanced past the Championship’s Miami FC in a penalty shootout in the previous round. The Hounds, meanwhile, will visit the New England Revolution in a contest that brings together two coaches who have become legends in their respective leagues in New England’s Bruce Arena and Pittsburgh’s Bob Lilley.

New Mexico United will head to face Austin FC as it looks to emulate its road success in the 2019 edition of the Open Cup, when it claimed road victories against the Colorado Rapids and FC Dallas on the way to reaching the tournament’s Quarterfinals.
