English forward’s fourth Open Cup goal of the season sends United through with 2-1 win at Isotopes Park

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A late goal by Josh Dolling sent New Mexico United to a 2-1 victory against Phoenix Rising FC and into the Round of 32 of the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday night at Isotopes Park, with the hosts grabbing victory after Phoenix had pulled level through Carlos Harvey despite being down to 10 players in the second half.

New Mexico opened the scoring just before halftime when Greg Hurst scored against his former club. The opportunity was created by Daniel Bruce, who drove through the midfield and laid a pass off to Hurst in the left side of the penalty area for a shot that was saved by Phoenix goalkeeper Patrick Rakovsky. The rebound fell back to the Scottish forward, however, and he fired home for his first goal for United.

Rising FC was then reduced to 10 men just before the halftime break when after an altercation in midfield Baboucarr Njie was sent off for kicking out at Bruce. The visitors found a way back into the contest with 13 minutes to go, however, when Manuel Arteaga hit the crossbar with a free kick before New Mexico goalkeeper Ford Parker denied Harvey’s first attempt on then rebound. The Panamanian international made no mistake on his second effort, however, as he scored from close range.

New Mexico pulled out a victory before the game could go to extra time, though, as Dolling scored his fourth goal in the Open Cup this season. The Englishman collected a headed clearance at the top of the penalty area and put a right-footed shot on target that was blocked before his second effort flew into the back of the net for a lead United maintained to the final whistle.
