Loudoun United FC added another feather to its cap on Saturday evening at Segra Field, with its eye-opening 3-0 victory against Birmingham Legion FC the first in the club’s history against the perennial USL Championship playoff contender.

While the headlines might have been reserved for Zach Ryan – who bagged his fourth goal of the season – and Kalil ElMedkhar as they each notched a goal and assist, their fellow goalscorer Wesley Leggett also put in a strong display as he opened his league account.

A rookie signing out of St. John’s University and USL League Two club Real Central Jersey FC, the 22-year-old made the most of his second start of the season with the opening goal of the game, a powerfully directed header that highlighted a strong performance.

In a fast-moving Loudoun attack, the New Jersey native’s ability to stretch the field proved valuable for the hosts, giving space for teammates to operate underneath.

“Wes brings us energy, brings us power,” said Loudoun Head Coach Ryan Martin. “He’s able to run in behind people and he’s able to get into really good positions. His movement and runs in the box are obviously really dangerous. Between the header that he missed earlier that the ‘keeper made a great save on, he creates a lot of problems stretching teams in behind.”

Loudoun has made a bright start to this season. United has already had two league outings in which it has scored three goals, half of its total of games with 3+ goals a season. With Leggett having also delivered a key finish in the side’s Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup victory against USL League One club North Carolina FC earlier this month, the new pro could help the side’s drive toward a first postseason berth.

Here are some of the other young players that caught our eye this weekend…

Joshua Wynder, Louisville City FC – Ahead of heading to join up with the United States Men’s National Team, Wynder delivered another stellar display winning 3 of 3 tackles, 6 of 6 ground duels, and 11 of 14 duels overall in his side’s 1-0 win against San Antonio FC.

Rocco Rios Novo, Phoenix Rising FC – The Argentine goalkeeper couldn’t do anything about Alex Dixon’s penalty kick for Monterey Bay F.C., but saved a point for Phoenix with a phenomenal late save to deny Christian Volesky.

Bryce Jamieson, Orange County SC – The 17-year-old winger has made three consecutive starts for OCSC and won the decisive penalty kick that led to Milan Iloski’s winner against Indy Eleven.

Kaveh Rad, Hartford Athletic – The center back was solid as Hartford took its first league win of the season, winning 4 of 4 ground duels and 2 of 3 aerial duels while making four clearances in a 2-1 victory at Oakland Roots SC.

Nathan Worth, FC Tulsa – The 16-year-old made his league debut for Tulsa against Charleston and was active in limited time, completing 9 of 13 passes and making two recoveries.
