2022 Championship Young Player of the Year finalist selected in squad to face Mexico on April 19

Louisville City FC star Joshua Wynder has been selected for the United States Men's National Team for the first time as the side faces Mexico on Wednesday, April 19 in Glendale, Ariz.

The astronomical rise of Louisville City FC star Joshua Wynder reached a new milestone on Wednesday when the 17-year-old center back was called up to the United States Men’s National Team for the first time in his career.

Wynder was named in the squad selected by interim Head Coach Anthony Hudson to face Mexico in the Allstate Continental Clásico on Wednesday, April 19 at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. He becomes the third active USL Championship player to be selected to a senior United States roster, following former teammate and LouCity standout Jonathan Gomez and former Orange County SC defender Kobi Henry in December 2021.

“It’s an honor to be called up to the senior national team,” Wynder said. “It’s another step toward my goals. I’m excited to get to camp, learn and continue growing as a player.”

Wynder is the youngest player selected to the squad, with his call-up coming less than a year since his first selection to a United States Youth National Team. Wynder was called up to United States U-19 Men’s National Team camp on April 22, 2022. He went on to help lead the U-19s to an undefeated calendar year, captaining the side twice on the way to earning nomination as a finalist for U.S. Soccer’s Young Male Player of the Year in December.

“Joshua Wynder’s call-up is another great example of how the USL and its clubs are developing the next generation of United States Men’s National Team players,” said USL Sporting Director Mark Cartwright. “Huge credit goes to Louisville City and everyone involved with Josh’s progression from the Academy to the first team and now to the senior national team. I’ve talked before about Josh’s talent, and it’s up to him to continue his trajectory, but for all in the USL, it shows the quality we can produce.”

Wynder has made 38 appearances in the USL Championship regular season and playoffs for Louisville City FC since becoming the youngest player to debut for the club on July 14, 2021 aged 16 years, 73 days old. Wynder was nominated as a finalist for the USL Championship’s Young Player of the Year award last year after helping lead LouCity to a fourth USL Championship Eastern Conference title and started in the 2022 USL Championship Final against San Antonio FC.

This past week, Wynder produced another stellar display as LouCity claimed a 1-0 victory against Detroit City FC, earning a place on the USL Championship Team of the Week after winning 7 of 7 duels and 3 of 3 aerial duels while recording four clearances, nine recoveries and two interceptions.

Wynder will depart for USMNT camp after LouCity’s showdown on Saturday night against San Antonio FC, a rematch of the 2022 USL Championship Final. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Lynn Family Stadium, with the game set to air live nationally on ESPN+.
