LouCity’s Wilson Harris has Le Rouge’s number as Joshua Wynder puts in a strong defensive display

Louisville City FC got back on track on Saturday afternoon as a late winner by Wilson Harris lifted his side to a 1-0 victory against Detroit City FC at Lynn Family Stadium, snapping a two-game losing streak for LouCity in the league and securing a second consecutive shutout in all competitions.

Here are three things we took away from the contest.

1. WILSON HARRIS HAS DETROIT CITY’S NUMBER

After leading Louisville City FC with 15 goals in the USL Championship last season, Wilson Harris had yet to open his account this season going into Saturday’s game, but there’s been something about facing Detroit City FC that has seemed to augur well for the young forward since joining LouCity prior to last season.

While there were missed opportunities – most notably a one-on-one with DCFC goalkeeper Nathan Steinwascher in the first half that Harris sent wide of the target – Harris found the winner for the hosts with 10 minutes to go with a poacher’s finish that even Steinwascher had little chance of keeping out. Harris now has three goals in four games against Detroit City in LouCity’s colors across the Championship and Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, with this one breaking the club’s recent downturn in league form.

2. JOSHUA WYNDER WINS HIS BATTLES

After seeing Joshua Wynder hobble off in the first half of LouCity’s game at Sacramento Republic FC last weekend, you might have wondered when we might see the 17-year-old phenom back in action. Those worries were assuaged a week later as the United States U-20 international returns to the lineup, and while it wasn’t a perfect display – he got caught out by DCFC’s Ben Morris on a clever halfway line turn before hustling back to challenge the eventual finish – there was one aspect where Wynder was at his best.

Detroit was limited to only 11 touches in the LouCity penalty area, with a key Wynder’s ability to win possession before danger could arrive. He won 10 of 10 overall duels including 3 of 3 aerial duels and tied for the game-high in possession won alongside Detroit City counterpart Michael Bryant with nine. Add another tidy passing performance, and it was another good day overall for the top U.S. prospect.

3. STEINWASCHER CAN’T SAVE DETROIT

If you needed another example of why Detroit City FC’s Nathan Steinwascher has established himself as one of the USL Championship’s top shot-stoppers, you needed only see his highlight reel from this clash. A tremendous one-on-one save to keep out Brian Ownby was followed by a pair of great reflex saves to keep out Sean Totsch and Jorge Gonzalez on close-range finishes.

That it wasn’t enough to earn Le Rouge a point on the road points to the attacking struggles the side continues to face early this season. Two big opportunities – the aforementioned breakaway by Morris and a snap-shot off a set piece for Connor Rutz – were sent off target, as were other half-chances. Officially, the visitors didn’t register a shot on target for the game, a worrying sign for a side that has now suffered four 1-0 setbacks in the league out of five games to start the season.
