The Third Round draw of the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup was announced by U.S. Soccer on Thursday night, detailing the matchups for the 20 USL Championship clubs that remain in the competition.

The draw started on a positive note for many clubs as 11 USL Championship teams were drawn as the home side with five hosting Major League Soccer clubs for the Third Round. Overall, 12 USL Championship clubs will square off against top-flight opposition as they look to emulate Sacramento Republic FC’s historic run to the Open Cup Final last year.

Two USL Championship rivalry matches also highlight the Third Round as New Mexico United will host Phoenix Rising FC while Sacramento Republic FC will battle Oakland Roots SC for a spot in the Open Cup Round of 32. Other local rivalry matches to watch include Miami FC hosting Inter Miami CF, Monterey Bay F.C. hosting the San Jose Earthquakes, and Louisville City FC visiting FC Cincinnati.

The Second Round saw all 24 USL Championship clubs enter the Open Cup with in-state rivalries and first-time clashes highlighting the action.

Sacramento Republic FC needed extra time to win 5-4 over amateur side Crossfire Redmond at Heart Health Park. Meanwhile, 2022 USL Championship Final winner San Antonio FC named a squad with an average age of 17.1 years old to win 2-1 over NISA Pro side Club de Lyon FC in extra time.

In the Eastern Conference, Indy Eleven secured a 3-1 victory over NISA club Michigan Stars FC in extra time, while Loudoun United FC – making its debut in the competition – also required extra time to win 2-1 over USL League One side North Carolina FC.

Of the 24 USL Championship clubs participating, only Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC, El Paso Locomotive FC, Rio Grande Valley FC and FC Tulsa failed to advance to the Third Round of the competition.
