CHARLESTON, S.C. – Four different players found the net as the USL Championship’s Charleston Battery cruised to a 4-1 victory against Savannah Clovers FC in the Second Round of the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at Patriots Point on Tuesday night.

Robbie Crawford, Augustine Williams, Nick Markanich and Tristan Trager scored for the hosts, while Charleston native Charlie Dennis made his professional debut for his hometown team during the victory.

Charleston applied consistent pressure from the early going and that paid off in the 36th minute when Robbie Crawford broke the deadlock in the 36th minute. After Savannah had half-cleared a corner kick, Crawford fired a shot from outside the penalty area that deflected off a defender and flew into the net off the underside of the crossbar.

Williams added a second for the hosts early in the second half before Trager added a third in the 62nd minute for his first goal in Battery colors. While Savannah pulled a goal back with 15 minutes to go through Andres Sanchez, Charleston quickly responded as Markanich scored just a minute later on Deklan Wynne’s second assist of the night.

NEW MEXICO UNITED 6, UDA SOCCER 0: Josh Dolling scored a hat trick as New Mexico United defeated UDA Soccer at Rio Rancho Soccer Stadium to send the hosts into the Open Cup Third Round.

New Mexico made a flying start as Daniel Bruce set up Joel Sosa for his first goal for the club in just the second minute, and Dolling almost added a second in the 28th minute when he hit the woodwork. United’s second goal came five minutes before the break, however, as Justin Portillo converted from the penalty spot after Greg Hurst had been brought down in the penalty area.

Dolling scored his first goal in United’s colors three minutes into the second half, and after Bruce had added a fourth in the 54th minute the English forward added to his big night. Dolling found the net from the penalty spot in the 61st minute after Bruce had been brought down in the box, and he capped his hat trick with 17 minutes to go to round out the victory.

OAKLAND ROOTS SC 3, EL FAROLITO FC 1: Oakland Roots SC got three goals in the opening 25 minutes from Johnny Rodriguez and Wolfgang Prentice to claim victory against amateur side El Farolito FC at Pioneer Stadium.

Roots SC opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Rodriguez headed home a cross by Ryan Her, and five minutes later Prentice added a second from the right side of the penalty area on 17-year-old Ethan Kohler’s first assist for the club. Prentice added his second of the night in the 24th minute from close range off an assist from Rodriguez, and while El Farolito pulled a goal back from the penalty spot thanks to Ricardo Delgado late in the first half that would be as close as the visitors would get as Oakland closed out the win.

MIAMI FC 3, JACKSONVILLE ARMADA FC 1: Miami FC made its superiority count in the second half thanks to pair of goals by Claudio Repetto as it advanced past a Jacksonville Armada FC side that grabbed a first-half lead before falling at Riccardo Silva Stadium.

Charles Eloundou put Jacksonville ahead in the 32nd minute on the first real chance for the visitors, but the lead was short-lived as Miami’s Ryan Telfer headed home two minutes later to level things up. Jacksonville was then reduced to 10 men late in the first half as Luto Tom was shown his second yellow card of the game, but the numbers evened out five minutes after the break when Miami’s Curtis Thorn received his second yellow card as well.

Repetto ensured the hosts would advance, however, as the second-half substitute scored with eight minutes to go from close range off an assist by Aedan Stanley. Repetto then added a third from then penalty spot three minutes later to wrap up the victory and a place in the Third Round.

TAMPA BAY ROWDIES 2, NONA FC 0: Lucky Mkosana recorded a goal and assist as the Tampa Bay Rowdies defeated USL League Two club NONA FC at Al Lang Stadium.

Tampa Bay had put pressure on the first-time Open Cup participants and broke the deadlock in the 25th minute when Mkosana pounced on a loose ball in the penalty area, created a window of space, and centered a pass for JJ Williams to hammer home. The Zimbabwean veteran – who scored four goals in last year’s Open Cup – added a second for the hosts seven minutes later as he chested home a cross by Dayonn Harris, and that proved enough for Tampa Bay to advance.

DETROIT CITY FC 1, GOLD STAR DETROIT FC 0: Yazeed Matthews scored the only goal of the night as Detroit City FC took victory against Gold Star Detroit FC at Keyworth Stadium.

As a chippy first half neared its conclusion, Detroit found the breakthrough as Adrian Billhardt delivered an angled ball into the penalty area that Matthews just beat the goalkeeper to, allowing him to head into the open net. Le Rouge goalkeeper Ryan Shellow made a pair of key saves to post the shutout as the visitors were unable to find a response despite creating chances to level after the break.
