KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The first meeting between Memphis 901 FC and USL League One club One Knoxville SC was heading toward a penalty shootout.

And then, thanks to Jeremy Kelly’s goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time in the second half of extra time, it wasn’t.

901 FC took a 2-1 victory against Knoxville to advance to the Third Round of the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S Open Cup as Kelly’s goal proved the difference in a hard-fought contest at Regal Soccer Stadium.

Kelly grabbed the decisive goal deep in stoppage time of extra time as a corner kick from the right by Aaron Molloy caromed off a defender and to the feet of Kelly in the right side of the penalty area. From there, Kelly shot home into the opposite corner of the net to send his side into the Third Round.

Memphis had originally taken the lead in the 38th minute when Molloy fired a cross into the penalty area and found Dylan Borczak, who put a header past Knoxville goal Peter Swinkels.

One Knox hit back 20 minutes into the second half as the hosts earned a penalty kick that was put home by Ilija Illic. As the game went into extra time Knoxville had chances to go ahead as Jake Keegan missed a bit opportunity two minutes into the extra session before Jimmie Villalobos had a pair of chances that went off the mark.

Those misses proved costly in the end as Memphis grabbed victory to advance to the Third Round for the first time since the 2019 edition of the tournament.
