DETROIT – Detroit City FC announced on Wednesday the club had signed defender Oniel Fisher to a one-year contract with a club option for the 2024 USL Championship season.

Fisher comes to Detroit with plenty of experience at the domestic and international levels. The 31-year-old most recently competed in Major League Soccer for Minnesota United FC, where he made 12 appearances across the regular season and Audi MLS Cup Playoffs during the 2022 season. Fisher has made 89 appearances in MLS since being selected in the Second Round of the 2015 MLS Super Draft.

A native of Jamaica, Fisher spent three seasons with the Sounders. He made more 40 appearances for the club and was part of Seattle’s MLS Cup-winning squad in 2016 as he made three appearances in the postseason. During his time in Seattle, he also made 23 appearances on loan in the USL Championship for the Tacoma Defiance, recording two assists in 1,857 minutes of action.

Fisher joined D.C. United in 2018 and made a career-high 24 appearances for the club that season. The campaign would end prematurely, however, after he suffered a serious knee injury in a collision with teammate Bill Hamid that September. Fisher was sidelined for a total of 16 months after picking up an additional hamstring injury while his recovery process was ongoing.

He returned to action with D.C. in 2020, making 15 appearances, before joining the LA Galaxy in the 2021 season and then Minnesota United FC last year.

Fisher has also made 25 appearances for the Jamaican Men’s National Team at the senior level, making his debut in 2010. Fisher has made seven appearances for the Reggae Boyz across two editions of the Concacaf Gold Cup in 2017 and 2021 – including starting in the 2017 Final – while also making five appearances for the side in World Cup Qualifying.
