PITTSBURGH – Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC announced on Tuesday the club had signed defender Trevor Zwetsloot to a one-year deal with a team option for 2024. The transaction is pending league and federation approval.

Zwetsloot is a 6-foot-2 defender/defensive midfielder who joins the Hounds after playing last season with New England Revolution II in MLS NEXT Pro, where he made 21 appearances for the MLS club’s reserve side.

“Trevor is a competitive kid that shows up every day with his hard hat and is ready to learn,” said Hounds Head Coach Bob Lilley. “He is a solid passer in the midfield and more than capable in the tackle, and we believe he will be a good addition to our team for the 2023 USL Championship season.”

Prior to his time in New England, the 23-year-old spent 2021 with the Melbourne Knights in the Australian second division, making 16 appearances. He also spent time in the academy of German club Werder Bremen from 2018-19, making one appearance with the club’s reserve side and featuring more regularly with their U-19 team.

Zwetsloot played his youth soccer in his hometown of Auckland, New Zealand, and he has made seven youth international appearances for New Zealand at the U-19 and U-20 age levels.
