SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento Republic FC announced on Wednesday the club had signed defender Aldair Sanchez ahead of the 2023 USL Championship season. The transaction is pending league and federation approval.

The 20-year-old joins the professional ranks with the Quails after impressing during preseason training with the club. A graduate of the Portland Timbers Academy, Sanchez competed collegiately at the University of North Carolina, where he made 30 appearances across two seasons. During his college career, Sanchez also competed for USL League Two club PDX FC, and has two prior appearances in the USL Championship as a USL Academy signing for the Timbers 2 during the 2019 campaign.

“Aldair impressed us at the open tryout and only got better throughout preseason with our First Team,” said Republic FC President and General Manager Todd Dunivant. “He has featured against three different MLS opponents and was up for the challenge each time. He plays with a fearlessness that will strengthen our depth at left wingback and fit seamlessly within our locker room.”

Sanchez is the sixth player since Republic FC’s debut season in 2014 to earn a professional contract after attending open tryouts. Previously, Emrah Klimenta and Max Alvarez earned spots on the eventual 2014 title-winning roster, Mackenzie Pridham and Elliot Hord joined the club in 2016, and defender Ashkanov Apollon made the team in 2020.
