Two assists power 5-0 victory against Panama, move Charleston forward to five overall in tournament

The Charleston Battery’s Fidel Barajas continued his stellar performance at the Concacaf Men’s U-17 Championship on Friday evening, recording a pair of assists as Mexico swept to a 5-0 victory against Panama at the Estadio Mateo Flores in Guatemala City.

Making his sixth consecutive start of the tournament, Barajas was central as Mexico opened the scoring eight minutes before halftime. Pressuring the Panama defense, the 16-year-old intercepted a pass and quickly broke forward before centering to Stephano Carillo for a simple finish to the left corner.

Mexico’s high pressure and Barajas’ sharp passing paid off again in the 67th minute when an errant clearance by the Panamanian goalkeeper came to the Battery signing 35 yards from goal. Controlling with his first touch, Barajas swiftly found Jose Urias at the top of the penalty area for a low finish to the right corner.

Barajas now sits on five assists for the tournament, putting him second at the tournament behind Roberto Osorto of Honduras. He has also recorded three goals as Mexico prepares to five the United States in Sunday’s final with El Tri looking for a fifth consecutive Concacaf Men’s U-17 Championship title.
