The Charleston Battery’s Fidel Barajas continued to shine at the Concacaf Men’s U-17 Championship as he bagged the opening goal in Mexico’s 6-0 victory against Nicaragua in the Round of 16 contest at Estadio Mateo Flores in Guatemala City on Saturday evening.

Barajas gave El Tri the lead in the 19th minute, making the most of a great cross-field pass by teammate Brandon Lomeli as he headed the ball forward to get past a defender with his first touch before lifting a left-footed finish into the right corner of the net for his third goal of the tournament.

Barajas was also involved in Mexico’s third goal of the game shortly before halftime, playing a pass forward for Stephano Carrillo before the attempted return pass ran to Gael Alvarez, whose powerful finish from the top of the penalty area found the top-left corner of the net. After playing the full 90 minutes in each of Mexico's three group games at the tournament, he was substituted off after 45 minutes after a solid first half.

Mexico will return to action on Tuesday night to face the winner of Sunday’s contest between El Salvador and Trinidad and Tobago. The winner of that Quarterfinal contest will book its place at the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Peru later this year.
