SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio FC announced on Tuesday the club had signed goalkeeper Carlos Mercado ahead of the 2023 USL Championship season. The transaction is pending league and federation approval and per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We are excited to welcome Carlos back to the team,” said San Antonio Head Coach Alen Marcina. “He is a great culture fit with a complete understanding of the team identity. Carlos possesses the ideal mindset, high-quality skillset and significant potential. As a staff, we are pleased with our goalkeeping unit.”

Mercado played college soccer at the University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio and signed professionally with SAFC in 2020 after impressing during the preseason. Prior to 2020, Mercado was a part of the FC Dallas academy, and earned call-ups to the Mexican Youth U-18 National Team as well as the United States Youth U-16 National Team.

The 23-year-old made his San Antonio FC debut in October of 2021, coming off the bench to play 29 minutes and preserve a shutout in a 3-0 win against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC.
