Toros sign goalkeeper Carlos Merancio

Mexico native made 51 appearances in USL League One for FC Tucson

EDINBURG, Texas – Rio Grande Valley FC announced on Friday the club had signed goalkeeper Carlos Merancio ahead of the club’s 2023 USL Championship campaign. The signing is pending league and federation approval.

Merancio began his early career in his home country of Mexico competing in the academy ranks of Monarcas Morelia, appearing in one official match for Monarcas Morelia Premier in 2018.

In 2019, Merancio made the jump to USL League One, joining FC Tucson, where he recorded three clean sheets in 22 appearances across two seasons at the club. In 2021 he joined USL Championship side Hartford Athletic, appearing in one match before returning to Tucson ahead of the 2022 season.

In recent action, the Mexican keeper appeared in 29 league matches with FC Tucson and two Lamar Hunt U.S Open Cup matches with the side. Overall, he tallied five clean sheets prior to the conclusion of the 2022 season.

The 24-year-old joins established veteran goalkeeper Tyler Deric as part of the squad for the Toros as the club prepares for its 2023 season opener on Sunday, March 12 against Las Vegas Lights FC at H-E-B Park.
