LEESBURG, Va. – Loudoun United FC announced on Thursday the club had signed forward Panayioti “Panos” Armenakas ahead of the 2023 USL Championship season. The signing is pending league and federation approval.

“Panos is an extremely gifted and technical playmaker,” said Loudoun United FC Head Coach Ryan Martin. “He has had tremendous club experience abroad and international experience with the Australian youth national team. There is no doubt that he will transition well to the USL. His love for the game and willingness to learn will be a great addition to our team this season.”

Armenakas most recently played for Danish 1st Division club Vendsyssel FF. In 2020, the Australian international signed a contract with Zulte Waregem, recording two goals and one assist in nine appearances. He played youth football for Sydney Olympic, Watford and Udinese. Originally, the forward represented Greece internationally before switching to Australia.

The 24-year-old represented Greece at under-17 level, playing in two friendly matches against Turkey in 2014. In 2015, he was selected in Australia’s 21-man squad for the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile. During this time, he was selected by The Guardian as one of the 50 best young talents in world football.

Armenakas trained with the Milan Soccer School in Sydney before training with A.C. Milan in early 2010. In late 2010, Armenakas signed with Watford’s Youth Academy. After spending two years with Watford, Armenakas signed a three-year deal with Udinese.

Through signing with the Italian club, Panos became the youngest Australian to sign a professional contract in any top five leagues in Europe.

In 2015, Armenakas signed a contract extension, keeping him at Udinese until 2018. In July 2017, Armenakas joined Tubize in the Belgian First Division B on a one-year loan. The 5-foot-10 forward made six appearances.
