MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis 901 FC announced on Friday the club had signed defender Jelani Peters to a multi-year contract ahead of the 2023 USL Championship season. The transaction is pending league and federation approval.

Peters appeared in 33 matches in his second season with Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC in 2022. The Trinidad and Tobago international scored two goals and defensively recorded 95 clearances, 10 blocks and 32 interceptions. The center back has made 58 appearances overall in the Championship over his career, having also previously competed for Toronto FC II.

“We’re fortunate to be able to add Jelani,” said 901 FC Head Coach Stephen Glass. “A player of his caliber and experience is always in high demand and we’re delighted he’s chosen Memphis as his new home.”

The Diego Martin, Trinidad and Tobago, native began his professional career with TT Pro League side W Connection, making 22 appearances including four Champions League caps before moving to Toronto FC II during the 2017 season.

Peters joins fellow Trinidad and Tobago international Leston Paul on the 2023 roster, representing Trinidad and Tobago in 2018 World Cup qualifying and at the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup.

“I’m really excited about this season,” Peters said. “I look forward to being crowned as champions in the end.”
