BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Birmingham Legion FC announced on Thursday the club had signed forward Neco Brett ahead of the 2023 USL Championship season, marking the return of the club’s all-time leading scorer for a second stint in the Magic City. The signing is pending league and federation approval.

“We’re thrilled to have Neco back in Birmingham,” said Legion FC President and General Manager Jay Heaps. “He is a player that Tommy and I have a great relationship with, and he has proven that he can score lots of goals in this league. We’re excited to add him back in to our attacking group.”

Brett led the line for Legion FC in 2020 and finished the shortened season with nine goals and three assists in 17 games. He returned in 2021 and had an even better season by bagging a career-high 18 goals and three assists to earn a spot on the USL Championship All-League Second Team. His 27 goals are the most in Legion FC’s history, three ahead of teammate Prosper Kasim.

The Jamaican spent 2022 with fellow USL Championship side New Mexico United and made 25 appearances, scored eight goals, and added three assists. Before joining Legion FC, Brett was voted to the 2019 USL Championship All-League Second Team with Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC, a club where he scored 32 goals to go with 17 assists in 70 games across two seasons.

Brett currently ranks sixth in the Championship’s regular season all-time with 69 goals in his career across 169 appearances. His career strike rate of a goal every 176.3 minutes ranks eighth among players with at least 50 regular season goals in the league’s history, while he has also notched 23 assists.

Brett began his career in his native Jamaica, and played for the Jamaica Under-17 and Under-20 teams, before coming to America to play college soccer at Robert Morris University from 2012 to 2015. In 2016, he was selected in the second round of the MLS SuperDraft by the Portland Timbers.
