COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC announced on Wednesday the club had appointed Stephen Hogan as its new Head Coach ahead of the 2023 USL Championship season. An assistant at the club for the past two seasons, Hogan is the fourth Head Coach in Switchbacks’ history.

“I want to thank Brendan Burke for everything over the last 15 years of our careers together,” said Hogan. “We have accomplished a lot together, and I am very excited to be able to continue on what he and the staff have built for this coming year. I'd like to thank my wife, Erica, for pushing me every day to do what I love to do. Thank you to the Ragain family and the organization for trusting me in continuing to push this club forward toward playoffs and a championship.”

Hogan joined the Switchbacks’ staff following the arrival of former Head Coach Brendan Burke in January 2021. He was promoted to Technical Director the following December. The 37-year-old helped Colorado Springs post a record of 30-23-13 over the past two regular seasons and advance to the Western Conference Final of the USL Championship Playoffs for the first time in its history last November.

Prior to joining the Switchbacks’ staff, the Dublin native served for five years as an assistant coach at former USL Championship club the Philadelphia Union II under Burke. Hogan helped produce and develop players including current United States National Team players Brenden Aaronson, Mark McKenzie, and Auston Trusty, and 2022 USL Championship Young Player of the Year Michee Ngalina. During to his time with the Union II, Hogan also served as Head Coach of Reading United AC, the USL League Two affiliate of the Philadelphia Union. He led the squad to an overall record of 22-5-1 in his two seasons with the club, as well as an appearance in the Eastern Conference Final.

“The Head Coaching position is the most important hire in the organization for the Switchbacks Football Club,” said Switchbacks President Nick Ragain. “This person is responsible for roster building, technical staff, budget decisions, player care, match strategy, wins & losses, etc. while working closely with ownership, management, agents, players, coaches, sales and marketing staff, the USL, and partners.

“When considering who would take the reins and be named our fourth official Head Coach in Club history, there was only one choice in mind for us: Stephen Hogan.

“Stephen has been intimately involved with about every technical detail over the past two years including the building of our 2023 roster. He has served the organization incredibly well, has a strong support staff in place, and personal experience with most of our new players. The whole organization has great respect for Stephen’s abilities, and we anticipate great success.”
