LEESBURG, Va. – Loudoun United FC announced on Tuesday the club had signed Canadian defender Kwame Awuah ahead of the 2023 USL Championship season. The transaction is pending league and federation approval.

“Kwame [Awuah] is a proven winner at every club he has been at,” said Loudoun United Head Coach Ryan Martin. “He is dangerous going forward so he can play central midfield or left back with his quality. With his experience playing in multiple leagues including the Concacaf League, he will be a huge asset to our young squad.”

Awuah joined St. Louis CITY2 ahead of the inaugural 2022 MLS NEXT Pro season, following stints at various clubs including Major League Soccer’s New York City FC. Selected with the No. 16 pick of the 2017 MLS SuperDraft after a stellar college career at the University of Connecticut, the 27-year-old made 10 appearances for the club before signing with the Canadian Premier League’s Forge FC ahead of the 2019 season.

A native of Toronto, Awuah helped Forge quickly become one of the CPL’s top clubs. He made 63 appearances in the league across the regular season and playoffs and helped Forge claim two CPL titles in 2019 and 2020. Those victories saw Forge FC qualify for the Concacaf League, in which Awuah made 14 appearances over two campaigns, with the second campaign seeing Forge qualify for the 2022 Concacaf Champions League after reaching the Semifinals of the 2021 Concacaf League.
