HARTFORD, Conn. – Hartford Athletic announced on Thursday return to the club of midfielder Andre Lewis for the 2023 USL Championship season. Lewis was previously under contract for the upcoming campaign.

“I’m excited to be coming back to Hartford,” said Lewis. “We made great progress under this technical staff at the end of last season, and I’m thrilled with the direction of the club going into 2023. Under Coach Ramos, I believe we will play with greater consistency throughout the regular season and get this club back to the playoffs.”

Lewis returns for a second season after Hartford acquired him via transfer from fellow USL Championship club Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC in January this year. The Jamaican midfielder proved to be a valuable acquisition for the club, recording six goals and three assists across 33 appearances during the 2022 campaign. Lewis also recorded the second-most chances created with 40, trailing only fellow returnee Danny Barrera.

“Andre performed well last year and brings quite a bit of creativity to our midfield,” said Hartford Head Coach Tab Ramos. “We encouraged him to be aggressive and go to goal more at the end of last season, and we were very happy with how he responded. We expect him to be a key contributor to our squad and an elite player in this league next season.”

The eight-year USL Championship veteran was voted to the USL Championship Team of the Week for his performances in Week 17 and in Week 30. On October 8th, Lewis recorded Hartford’s first hat trick in a 6-3 win against the Charleston Battery. His penalty kick to seal the third goal was voted “Moment of the Year” in this year’s Fan’s Choice Awards.

“Andre is an established player who we think has the potential to be one of the best midfielders in the league,” said Athletic Technical Director Ray Reid. “He consistently creates chances for his teammates and is as good a guy in the locker room as he is on the pitch. We are very happy to have him here in Hartford.”

Lewis joins Conor McGlynn, Prince Saydee, Robin Lapert, and Barrera on the 2023 roster. More information on new and returning player signings will be available in the coming weeks.
