Roots SC’s Karlsson called into Iceland National Team squad

2022 USL Championship All-League selection Ottar Magnus Karlsson of Oakland Roots SC has been selected by Iceland Men’s National Team for a pair of upcoming international friendlies against 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers Saudi Arabia and South Korea prior to the opening of the tournament later this month.

Iceland will face Saudi Arabia on Sunday at the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium in Dubai before heading to face South Korea on Friday, Nov. 11 at Hwaseong Stadium.

Karlsson earned Championship All-League Second Team honors for Oakland as he recorded a team-high 19 goals to help Roots SC earn a second consecutive trip to the USL Championship Playoffs. The 25-year-old also notched two assists and had a strike rate of a goal every 136 minutes during the campaign.

Joining Oakland on loan from Italian club Venezia F.C., Karlsson returns to the Icelandic squad having previously recorded two goals in nine appearances at the senior level. He most recently appeared for the side in 2020 in a 1-0 victory against Canada at Championship Soccer Stadium in Irvine, Calif., the home of the USL Championship’s Orange County SC.
