USL Championship Power Rankings - Week 31

San Antonio just keeps winning. The No. 1 spot is headed to central Texas again this week after San Antonio tied the USL Championship record for wins in a season with a 2-1 victory over Birmingham Legion FC on Sunday.

Louisville will hold the No. 2 spot for another week after clinching the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, but there’s plenty of change further down the Power Rankings as the USL Championship arrives at the final week of the regular season.

Last Week:
4		 Tampa Bay leads the league in scoring after posting an 8-0 win over Loudoun United FC, but questions remain over whether Tampa Bay can beat the teams it will see in the postseason. The Rowdies haven’t beaten a team above the line since the first week of August.
4 Rio Grande Valley FC

7		 The Toros are 5-1-1 since September 1 with a 1-0 loss to LouCity the only blemish on the recent record. RGV FC showed real grit to claw back from a 2-0 deficit in Memphis midweek and then eliminate Phoenix with a win Saturday.

8		 Oakland made the cross-country trek to beat Hartford Athletic 3-1 this weekend and keep the pressure on others in the playoff race out west. Another win this week in Pittsburgh would be huge for a team that’s 4-0-1 in its last five

5		 Memphis let a two-goal lead evaporate at home this week and then needed a goal in the 87th minute to beat lowly New York Red Bulls II. Memphis could use a confidence boost ahead of the playoffs.

Last Week:
9		 San Diego is unbeaten in four matches after a 3-3 draw against New Mexico United on Sunday. Landon Donovan’s team is locked into the No. 2 seed and looks tough to beat ahead of the playoffs.

3		 Detroit led Louisville at halftime but let that result slip away, snapping a seven-game unbeaten run.

12		 Colorado Springs saw leading scorer Hadji Barry depart for a USL Championship record transfer fee and then saw Michee Ngalina score a hat trick in a 4-1 demolition of El Paso Locomotive FC midweek.

Last Week:
17		 A midweek win over Atlanta United 2 was good, but then the Eleven slumped to a lopsided home defeat against FC Tulsa, also eliminated from playoff contention.

Last Week:
14		 El Paso laid an egg in a 4-1 defeat to Colorado Springs midweek, but bounced back with a 2-1 win over Orange County SC. The margin was ugly, but the results are about what can be expected from that set of matches

Last Week:
13		 Hartford lost 3-1 to Oakland on Saturday, but is still a very respectable 5-2-1 in its last eight matches. That’s very good for a team that won’t reach the playoffs.

Last Week:
15		 FC Tulsa didn’t play this weekend following the postponement of its match against Monterey Bay F.C. That match will be played this Wednesday night.
16 New Mexico United

Last Week:
18		 New Mexico’s game against LA Galaxy II was washed out Wednesday and then United went on the road and earned a 3-3 draw in San Diego. In isolation, that’s a commendable result, but it’s noteworthy that this team hasn’t won a game since August 20.
17 Birmingham Legion FC

Last Week:
11		 Birmingham has lost close matches to a very hot Oakland Roots SC side and San Antonio FC in its two matches. Losses aren’t good, but each of those results is understandable at least.
18 Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC

Last Week:
16		 The Hounds have alternated draws and losses in each of their last five matches, including a 1-1 draw in Sacramento on Sunday. Given the form Sacramento is in, Pittsburgh should have hoped for more.

Last Week:
20		 Sacramento snapped a three-game losing skid with a draw against the Hounds, but Sacramento is basically out of time to get hot before the playoffs.

21		 Monterey Bay’s late season push for the playoffs is starting to fade from the memory as this team is winless since September 17.

19		 Phoenix’s playoff aspirations were finally ended this week with a loss at Rio Grande Valley FC, ending a brief two-game winning streak.

25		 Atlanta beat LA Galaxy II on Sunday, ending the Galaxy’s playoff chase. Tristan Trager looks like a good player in the making after another couple of goals in that match.

24		 Loudoun’s 8-0 loss to the Rowdies on Saturday night was ugly. There’s no denying it.
