UEFA “A” coaching license-holder to also join Head Coach Trevor James’ coaching staff

New Detroit City FC signing Richard Foster has made more than 400 appearances in the Scottish Premiership in his career as he moves into a player-coach role with Le Rouge.

DETROIT – Detroit City FC announced Monday the club had signed veteran Scottish defender Richard Foster. The 37-year-old will serve as a player-coach for Le Rouge as he joined Head Coach Trever James’ staff, with Foster currently the holder of a UEFA “A” coaching license.

Foster’s contract is for the remainder of the 2022 season, with team and player options that could see him be part of the Rouge and Gold family through the 2024 season. The transaction is pending league and federation approval.

A native of Elgin, Foster has made more than 400 appearances in the Scottish Premiership, including competing for legendary Scottish club Rangers FC. He began his career as a youth product of Aberdeen FC, where was a First Team player for almost a decade and made 235 appearances for the Dons.

Ahead of the 2010-11 season, Foster was loaned from Aberdeen to Rangers FC and played a large part in its title-winning campaign that season, appearing in 15 matches as Rangers edged out perennial rival Celtic by a point for the Premiership title.

Foster subsequently spent two seasons at Bristol City in the EFL Championship, where he appeared in 50 matches over two seasons, amassing 47 starts and more than 4,220 minutes of action for the Robins. Since then, Foster had a second stint with Rangers before competing for Ross County, St. Johnstone and Partick Thistle before joining Le Rouge.
