Dramatic late equalizer against rival Roots SC claimed monthly award

TAMPA, Fla. – Sacramento Republic FC’s Luis Felipe Fernandes has won the USL Championship’s Fans’ Choice Goal of the Month award for July as his dramatic late equalizer against NorCal rival Oakland Roots SC on July 9 at Heart Health Stadium finished top of the poll conducted over the past weekend.

The veteran midfielder has had a standout season for Republic FC, helping guide the club with key goals in its run to the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final against Orlando City SC on September 7. Against Roots SC, he delivered another crucial goal to cap a six-goal thriller between the clubs that had twice seen Sacramento take the lead before Oakland rallied behind Golden Boot contender Ottar Magnus Karlsson’s brace. Trailing going into stoppage time, Republic FC’s Rodrigo Lopez shook his defender on the right side and created space for a chipped cross to the back post where Fernandes came crashing in, heading home to send the crowd into wild celebrations.

Fernandes’ goal earned 42 percent of the poll conducted at USLChampionship.com to claim the award. The Charleston Battery’s AJ Paterson finished in second place on 34 percent for his powerfully struck free kick against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on July 22 at Weidner Field, while Phoenix Rising FC’s Aodhan Quinn finished third on 13 percent for his Olimpico off a corner kick from the right against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on July 30 at Wild Horse Pass
