Detroit City, San Antonio FC and Sacramento Republic FC have delivered the magic of the cup this season

There’s nothing in American team sports like the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

The single-elimination knockout tournament currently in its 107th edition offers a chance at glory for every team in the field, bringing together clubs from throughout the three tiers in the professional ranks and amateur qualifiers.

And there’s nothing quite like the feeling that comes from upsetting the odds.

This season, three USL Championship clubs have done just that. For Detroit City FC and San Antonio FC there was the thrill of claiming a first win in club history against opposition from Major League Soccer on memorable nights at Keyworth Stadium and Toyota Field.

For Sacramento Republic FC, the story is still unfinished as it prepares to face Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday night in the Semifinals at Heart Health Park (10:30 p.m. ET | ESPN+ | Preview) with a chance to become the first lower-division side to reach the Final since the Charleston Battery in 2008.

Ahead of that contest, here’s a look back at the moments that have shaped this year’s competition so far.
