Victory-clinching penalty kick save against Orange County SC claimed top spot in poll

TAMPA, Fla. – New Mexico United’s Alex Tambakis has claimed the USL Championship’s Fans’ Choice Save of the Month award for June, earning the honor for the second consecutive month as his denial of a stoppage-time penalty kick against Orange County SC that clinched a crucial road victory claimed top spot in the poll conducted over the past weekend.

The Greek shot-stopper has quickly become a fan-favorite in New Mexico since his arrival last season and has recorded 0.85 goals-against average and 36 saves so far this season while helping put United in position to reach the USL Championship Playoffs. One of the biggest saves of the season so far came against Orange County on June 4 at Championship Soccer Stadium as Tambakis made a diving save to keep out Erick “Cubo” Torres’ penalty kick to the left corner to preserve at 2-1 victory on the road.

Tambakis’ save earned 45% percent of the poll conducted at USLChampionship.com over the past weekend. San Antonio FC’s Jordan Farr took second place on 28 percent for an outstanding one-handed save that kept out a close-range header by Monterey Bay F.C.’s Christian Volesky on June 11, while Oakland Roots SC’s Paul Blanchette took third place on 21 percent for a brilliant punched stop to keep out San Antonio FC’s Justin Dhillon at Toyota Field on June 18.
