Sacramento Republic FC Head Coach Mark Briggs knew what his side was up against as it headed to face the LA Galaxy at Dignity Health Sports Park in the Quarterfinals of the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

He also knew what his side was capable of.

“You go anywhere in the world, and you mention LA Galaxy, everybody knows who they are,” said Briggs. “They’re the most prestigious club in U.S. soccer, so we’re coming up against a giant, so to speak. But this group of players that myself and [General Manager] Todd [Dunivant] put together this year we’d trust against anyone. I genuinely believe that. On our day, we can beat any given opponent, and tonight, why can’t we?

“We have quality in our locker room, we have experience in our locker room, and we have a togetherness, a camaraderie, a spirit, a mentality that not many teams have, and when you have that, no matter who the opponent is, we have the ingredients to go and be successful and win this game.”

In the latest edition of Beyond the 90, Republic FC gives a behind the scenes look at the club’s historic 2-1 victory against the Galaxy that sent Sacramento to the Semifinals of the Open Cup for the first time in its history.

Republic FC will host Sporting Kansas City on Wednesday, July 27 at Heart Health Park with a chance to become the first lower-division side to advance to the Final since the Charleston Battery in 2008.
