Welcome to the USL Championship’s weekly News & Notes, where this week we look back on the highest-scoring day in the 2022 season so far and where it ranks in league history, a pair of notable landmarks for two of the Championship’s longtime standouts, and San Antonio’s continuing climb toward one of the league’s all-time single season records.

NEWS AND NOTES

CHAMPIONSHIP LOGS HIGHEST-SCORING DAY IN 2022 SEASON

This past Saturday in the USL Championship delivered the highest-scoring individual day of the season so far as the 11-game slate produced 41 goals as three teams delivered five-goal performances on the same day for the first time in three seasons.

The Tampa Bay Rowdies, El Paso Locomotive FC and San Diego Loyal SC all found the net five times, matching a feat last accomplished by the Rowdies, San Antonio FC and the New York Red Bulls II on August 24, 2019.

The overall goal total sat just outside the Top 10 in highest-scoring days in league history. The record remains 60 goals, which were scored across 15 games on Saturday, August 25, 2018. Among the highlights that day were a 4-4 draw between the Charleston Battery, six-goal performances by North Carolina FC and Louisville City FC, and only five teams out of 30 that were kept scoreless.

PHOENIX’S QUINN, PITTSBURGH’S DIXON REACH LANDMARKS

Phoenix Rising FC’s Aodhan Quinn became only the second player to record 40 goals and 40 assists in the USL Championship’s regular season, while Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC’s Alex Dixon became the sixth to reach 40 goals and 30 assists in the past weekend’s action.

Quinn joined former Rising FC teammate Solomon Asante as the second member of the 40-40 club, with his goal against Las Vegas Lights FC moving him to 40 goals and 44 assists in 205 regular season appearances. A 2021 Championship All-League selection, Quinn is also moving toward the top 10 in regular season appearances in the league, while currently sitting in the top five in regular season minutes (16,882).

Dixon notched his 30th assist in Pittsburgh’s contest against the Tampa Bay Rowdies on Saturday night, becoming the third player to reach at least 40 goals and 30 assists in the league’s regular season in his 201st appearance. Quinn and New Mexico United’s Chris Wehan have also joined the group this season.

ROWDIES SNAP HIGHMARK STADIUM HEX

The Tampa Bay Rowdies claimed their first victory on the road against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC in six visits on Saturday night as the club’s 5-2 victory marked only the second time the Hounds had conceded five goals on its home turf in the USL Championship era. The victory moved the Rowdies off the list of teams that have made a minimum of five visits to an opposing venue without claiming a win currently in the Championship.

SAN ANTONIO CONTINUES ROAD DOMINANCE

San Antonio FC claimed its eighth road victory out of 10 away games this season in the USL Championship on Friday night as it defeated Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC 1-0 at Weidner Field. With seven road games remaining this campaign, San Antonio has a chance to match – or surpass – the record for most road victories in a regular season in league history, set by the New York Red Bulls II in their title-winning season in 2016.

Discipline Report – Week 17

TAMPA, Fla. – The following is the USL Championship’s discipline report for Week 16 of the 2022 USL Championship season:

San Antonio FC’s PC has been suspended for one game following the review of an incident in the club’s contest against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on June 24 by the Independent Review Panel, which was previously ruled a caution. PC will be unavailable for selection in San Antonio’s contest against FC Tulsa on Tuesday night.

Orange County SC’s Daniel Pedersen has been suspended for one game following his red card for two cautionable offenses against Loudoun United FC on June 25. Pedersen will be unavailable for selection in Orange County’s contest against San Diego Loyal SC on Wednesday night.

Atlanta United 2 assistant coach Omar Jarun has been suspended for one game following his red card for using unauthorized communication equipment during his side’s contest against Oakland Roots SC on June 25. Jarun will serve his suspension during Atlanta’s contest against the Charleston Battery on Wednesday night.

New York Red Bulls II assistant coach Samuel Castellanos has been suspended for one game following his red card for abusive language against El Paso Locomotive FC on June 25. Castellanos will serve his suspension during the Red Bulls II’s contest against Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC on Friday night.

Las Vegas Lights FC’s Alex Lara is no longer on caution accumulation warning following his fifth consecutive game without a yellow card against Phoenix Rising FC on June 24, which earned a good behavior deduction to his current total for the season.

The following players enter the upcoming matches one caution away from a yellow card accumulation suspension for their eighth yellow card of the season. Here is the breakdown per club:
