USL players, alumni set for Concacaf U-20 Championship

Seventeen players across the Championship, League Two and USL Academy earn call-ups

Seventeen players that have competed across the United Soccer League ecosystem this year, and numerous additional alumni, are set to feature as the Concacaf U-20 Championship kicks off on Saturday in Honduras. Players from the USL Championship, League Two and USL Academy have earned call-ups across eight countries as the United States looks to claim the title for a third consecutive time.

Five players that have competed in the Championship this season have earned selection by the United States, with 2021 Championship Young Player of the Year finalist Diego Luna, who was recently transferred from El Paso Locomotive FC to Major League Soccer's Real Salt Lake, joined by the New York Red Bulls II duo of Caden Clark and Daniel Edelman and LA Galaxy II defenders Markus Ferkranus and Jalen Neal.

Overall, 17 players in the United States squad have previously played in the USL Championship or League One, accumulating a combined 335 appearances and 24,186 minutes of action in the two professional divisions.

A trio of players have also earned selection by Mexico, with Las Vegas Lights FC defender Tony Leone and midfielder Christian Torres joined by the LA Galaxy II’s Jonathan Perez in the squad. Leone has made eight appearances for Lights FC this season among prior call-ups to national team camp, and has notched 34 clearances and eight blocked shots, while Torres has made 10 appearances for Las Vegas.

Another Lights FC player is among the trio of Championship players called up by El Salvador, with Alex Romero joined by Oakland Roots SC’s Javier Mariona and Loudoun United FC’s Jeremy Garay in the squad.

North Carolina U23’s Parker O’Ferrel leads the players from USL League Two selected for the event as he joins Puerto Rico’s squad for the tournament. A former USL Academy signing by League One’s North Carolina FC, where he made eight appearances before enrolling for his freshman season at the University of North Carolina. The 18-year-old has made four appearances in League Two this season.

Elsewhere, Black Rock FC’s Sebastian Manon has been selected by the Dominican Republic, while Micaah Garnette of FC Motown is part of the St. Kitts and Nevis squad.


Queensboro FC's Nestor Cabrera is part of the Guatemala squad that will compete at the Concacaf U-20 Championship in Honduras.

USL Academy standout Nestor Cabrera of Queensboro, meanwhile, is set to compete for Guatemala alongside the New York Red Bulls II’s Arian Recinos. Cabrera has been among the key players this year for QBFC as it builds toward its inaugural season in the USL Championship, with the side currently having won six of seven games in the Metro NYC Division in the USL Academy League this season.
